Weekly Book Review #2

launch.jpg

This week’s book is “Launch,” which is exactly what Nelson Searcy and Kerrick Thomas teach you to do through this book. If you are looking for practical, down to earth, applicable principles for launching a church then this is the TEXT BOOK to get you on your way.

Now notice, I didn’t say the BIBLE (which is the ONLY book for actually showing you how to start church and the ONLY book in which I will entirely agree with everything that is actually in it), but this book is still a vital resource for anyone interested in starting a church from scratch.

WOW. These guys have totally blown me away by all the information that they provide for anyone looking to get started, just keep moving along, or even to refer back to for years to come as an annual catalyst for what needs to be done in the life of a church leader!

Like I say, this book is the TEXT BOOK for starting churches from scratch so this will definitely be a book I keep on my desk at all times just to refer back to over and over and over again (like you would any other text book worth reading on any other subject).

Of course there are ideas and thoughts in here that I happen to disagree right now, but that is not to say that I may not come to agree with them in the future based on my own personal experiences (and let’s be honest… probably screw-ups).

But either way, I appreciate what these guys have to share. They have been threw the trenches, fault the battles, faced the disappointments, over come the temptations, and just so happened to have launched a very successful church along the way.

So it goes without saying that these two pastors, who have a true heart for starting churches and the guys out there doing it that, are definitely worth investing the time it takes to learn from them.

If you are the least bit at all interested in (or more importantly know you are called to) plant a church then I highly recommend you read this book. In fact, I will go so far as to say that I would advice you NOT to even consider starting a church until you spend some much needed quality time digesting the principles and practices presented in this book.

You would be a fool to even consider doing it without first having read this book!

So pick it up. Read it through. Mull it over. Discuss it with others. Come back to it again and again. Let God speak to you through what these guys have to say. And then we’ll talk about you maybe starting a church one day.

Overall: AMAZING READ.

Check it out if you haven’t already. One of those that will go on my MUST READ LIST.

Bitter Sweet

This morning, I just learned that Head Coach Lynn Fleming of the mighty West Oak Warriors has decided to move on from the Oconee County Area.

After completing his 4th year of coaching the Warriors, Coach Fleming will walk away as the most successful football coach in West Oak Football’s history. During his 4 years at WO, he lead the Warriors to 3 post season appearences AND (from the opinion of someone who has been a part of the program since he was 5 years old) has completely turned the entire program around.

So this morning is bitter sweet for me. I am disappointed to see Coach Fleming leave, but I am excited about the opportunity he has for the future.

Lynn was not only my head coach (as I served with him as his Team Chaplain the last 2 years), but he is also my personal friend.

I have seen him both on and off the football field, both in and out of the football program, and I am here to tell you that he is one the most outstanding men I have been around. The man is simply the real deal and no one can ever argue against that!

I know the character and the capability of this man, and I know he has only wanted what is best for this team, which is exactly what he has gotten out of them. Lynn loves this community, this school, and this team so I know this decision has been hard for him to make.

But in the end, God is faithful. And while I hate to see Lynn go, I know God has something BIG in store for Lynn when he finally gets to where he is going.

(In case you are wondering where he is going, please know that the announcement will come in the next several days).

Lynn, I love you bro. And I thank you for the opportunity to interact, impact, and even talk smack with this team! You have been a tremendous friend to me and you have taught me multiple lessons about what TRUE LEADERSHIP is really about. I can’t wait to see what God does through you in the future.

If ever you needed to know what being a High School Football Coach is really about, then all you need to do is spend 5 minutes with one of the best there is in Lynn Fleming.

He is a man of character and conviction, personality and passion, wisdom and wittyness, leadership and love.

And oh by the way… In case you haven’t happened to notice while he has been here, the man KNOWS THE GAME!!!

And he knows how to get his players to play the game. Just take a look at the record because it simply speaks for itself.

Lynn, you have done a better job here than anyone else I know could have ever done with the players you’ve had to play. I have never seen someone do so much with so little in such as short a period of time as you did. Thank you for what you have done.

Go get ‘em bro! And know I will be cheering for you all the way.

Rode Trip

I just got finished putting together our calendar for the upcoming month. It looks as though we are going to be hitting a lot of churches along the way during our upcoming makeshift “Road Trip.”

The team we are traveling with is made up of some of THE MOST incredible people on the planet and I can’t wait to hit the road with them.

All of these people love Jesus, love people, love His church, love leading, love following, love serving, love giving, love dreaming, and love stepping out to make a difference in the lives of other people!

I know God is going to do amazing things through this team of individuals that He is right now bring together to step out and impact the world.  And I know that once we hit each of these churches together in the upcoming month that we will all be blown away by what God has done, can do, and will do in the lives of this team if we will only be obedient to what He has asked us to do.

So churches get ready! We are coming to check you out. And I know that you are going to prove to us just how true this verse in Scripture really is!!!

Make sure to check back later. Posted List IS Coming Soon…

Carr driven out. Moose roped in!

FINALLY!!!

I have been waiting on these two deals to go down and it looks the my Carolina Panthers have finally started thinking straight when it comes to making solid off-season moves.

As of today, David Carr is finally on his way out of Carolina. When we brought in at the beginning of the season, I really had high hopes that what happened in Houston wasn’t his fault, but rather his offensive line. However, after watching him play for a total of 2 minutes I quickly realized that he is THE most overated overall #1 pick of all time. The guy is a head case who dresses up like mickey mouse and puts more attention on his G.Q. covers with his slick back hair than he does on reading defences and making quality throws in order to contribute as the game winning quarterback we all hoped he would be. But finally, he’s gone! I don’t know if I could take much more and it looks like the Richardson’s couldn’t either. Carr, uh…. I spit at that name. SPIT!

After all the disgust and anguish he has caused, I would have been satisfied with just his release.

But then when I see that we picked up the Moose… well, nothing could finer than to be in Carolina as the Panthers scored on TWO transactions today!!!

That’s right. The Moose is back!

It remains to be seen if Muhsin Muhammed is not only back AND better than ever, but I am one who is willing to give him a shot. After signing a two year contract, I know he will retire as life-long Panther. I just pray that his body is able to hold up for at least the next two years in order to remain one the top #2 recievers in the league. We all know who is #1.

Finally, #87 & #89 are reunited and it feels so good! Only the future knows what the future entails, but I can’t wait to see what happens. The dynamic duo is back.

Can you say, “Championship!”

Great move boys, great move!!!

Actively Waiting

I believe this is best definition for “Patients“ I think I have ever heard. And this is exactly where God has me today.

I know He has BIG dreams for my life. I know He is desiring to use me in a mighty way. And I know that I have completely sold out to what God is asking me to do.

But there still comes a time when we have be patient. And I HATE being patient. It is one of the things I despise the most. I get so uncomfortable having to wait while at the same time knowing God is in control. But like I said before, I think this is exactly where God wants me to be right now.

So, I’m actively waiting.

What exactly does that mean?

Well, it means that I am praying for the will of God more than I ever have in my entire life.

It means I am actively pursuing the guidance of others who I know love Jesus and who love me in order to gain insight, wisdom, and discernment for what God would have me do next.

It means I am still pouring everything I can into the leaders God has put around me in order to create a culture that ultimately magnifies Him in everything we do.

It means scheduling appointments with others leaders who I know have gone through or are currently going through the same waiting process that I am right now in order to learn how to best use my time so that I can still be the most productive leader God would have me to be.

And it means driving around town all day today filling out applications for part time work because the substituting opportunities just aren’t going to make it happen that much longer (as much as love being around the students).

So, I’m actively waiting. Waiting for God to use me while still trying to be used right where I am today.

This is what I believe it means to be patient. And this is what I believe it means to actively wait, even if I hate having to do it.

I just keep having to tell myself, “God is in control. Not me!”

Where are you today?
